Rick Mears To Be Marlboro 500 Grand Marshal

CART Online (October 27, 1998) -- California Speedway is proud to announce that Rick Mears, one of only two three-time CART Champions (1979, 1981-82), will be honored at the Marlboro 500 Presented by Toyota this Sunday and has agreed to serve in the capacity as weekend Grand Marshal.

The California native, one of the big stars in the series formative years, has 26 career wins in CART FedEx Championship Series competition and stands third on the list of all-time winners. Having retired after the end of the '92 season, some in the California Speedway crowd may be unaware of Mears greatness. But not many! Consider that his 26 wins came from just 180 CART career starts and that he went a record 12 consecutive seasons scoring at least one victory.

Fifteen career wins from pole position is the statistic that perhaps best illustrates Mears dominance in the '80s, his career reaching a zenith of sorts in '82 when he claimed an amazing eight poles and four race wins.

Retired as a driver now for six seasons, Mears remains sixth on the CART career earnings list. He also remains a familiar figure on pit lane, serving in a key capacity as consultant for long-time employer Marlboro Team Penske.
