Visteon/Patrick Racing heads to Fontana for penultimate race of 2002 season.
JACKSON, MI - - OCTOBER 31, 2002 - - Visteon/Patrick Racing heads to Fontana, California for the penultimate race of the 2002 FedEx Championship Series season this weekend at California Speedway.
The 500, presented by Toyota, which is the only 500-mile race and the only superspeedway race in the series, should provide Visteon/Patrick Racing with a excellent opportunity to bring home their first podium, if not victory of the year.
Patrick Racing will be making its 11th start on the two-mile California Speedway oval where they have enjoyed a tremendous amount of success since its opening in 1997. In their previous ten starts the team has qualified in the top-ten four times including a pole by Scott Pruett in 1998. However, it is in the race where Patrick Racing has really shined finishing in the points seven times, the top-ten five times, the top-five four times and winning once, in 1999 with Adrian Fernandez. Visteon/Patrick Racing driver Oriol Servia will be making his third start at California Speedway. In two previous races his best starting position is 16th, in 2000 and his best finish is 11th last year.
"The Visteon/Patrick Racing Team has a chance to bring home a good result at Fontana," Servia said. "The team has a great history at this track and on superspeedways in general. This kind of race provides a lot of opportunities for strategy, which is an area that Patrick Racing is known to excel," he noted. "I think the Reynard chassis should be very strong at Fontana and Visteon/Patrick Racing has a lot of good data from this track, so we should have a good setup. It is a 500-mile race, so it is not as important where you start. You just have to be in a position to win after the last pit stop.and of course finish," Servia concluded.
Servia is making his 52nd career CART start, ninth for Visteon/Patrick Racing and 12th of the 2002 FedEx Championship Series season. He has finished in the points in six of the 11 races he has contested this year and in the top-ten four times with a best showing of fourth at the Rockingham 500 in Corby, England. The 28-year-old native of Pals, Catalonia, Spain is 19th in the point's standings with 30 points.
The 500 presented by Toyota will be televised live on Sunday, November 3 from 12:30 - 4:00 PM (PT) on Speed Channel. The pre-race show will air from 12:00 - 12:30 PM (PT). Speed Channel will also televise Friday, November 1, practice live from 2:00 - 3:30 PM (PT), CART Friday Night from 7:30 - 8:00 PM (PT) and Saturday, November 2, qualifying live from 11:30 - 1:00 PM (PT).
