LAST YEARS RACE

Mark Blundell (Motorola PacWest Mercedes) capped off a dominant weekend for the PacWest Racing Group when he won the 1997 Marlboro 500 Presented by Toyota, the first Champ Car event held at the new California Speedway. On a day when the ambient temperature reached 106 degrees, Blundell grabbed the lead on the 240th of 250 laps, when Greg Moore (Player's/Indeck Reynard Mercedes) encountered engine problems as he exited Turn 1. Blundell maintained the advantage to the checkered flag, finishing 0.847 seconds ahead of runner-up Jimmy Vasser (Target Reynard Honda), who posted his third consecutive podium finish. Blundell's victory made the weekend especially sweet for PacWest after teammate Mauricio Gugelmin (Hollywood PacWest Mercedes) recorded the fastest qualifying lap in auto racing history, 240.942 miles per hour, to win the pole position. Adrian Fernandez (Tecate/Quaker State Lola Honda) finished a season-best third while Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda), who clinched the PPG Cup three weeks earlier at Laguna Seca, sat out the race as the result of a mild concussion sustained during separate practice accidents.
