A wonderful weekend in the west.
The Bridgestone Motorsport program had a great weekend in California, achieving another impressive racing performance on a demanding superspeedway -- and announcing plans to be the presenting sponsor for the CART Champ Car Series.
"This is totally awesome news," racing legend Mario Andretti said. "It's wonderful to see a company like Bridgestone/Firestone be so supportive of the top categories of motor racing. I think it shows a lot of courage and a lot of commitment to motorsports. It's just great news."
On the track, Team Rahal/Shell driver Jimmy Vasser took the win in The 500 Presented by Toyota. Surrounded by his team in victory circle, Vasser said the Bridgestone Potenzas "were really, really consistent all day long; they worked great. At the end we changed the (tire) pressures some and got everything the way we wanted it."
Team owner Bobby Rahal echoed those sentiments, saying, "The Bridgestones were very consistent as usual, just perfect. They were predictable as always."
Quote from Al Speyer, Executive Director, Bridgestone Motorsport: "No doubt about it, this has been a very special weekend for the Bridgestone Motorsport program. The joint announcement with CART that we would become the presenting sponsor of the series was very rewarding. Any time you go into new territory there's always additional excitement, and this new energy will be beneficial to us, to CART and to race fans. It's a win-win-win situation, and we're pleased to take on the new challenge. Out on the track today, the CART Champ Car teams and drivers put on a tremendous show. We congratulate our good friends Jimmy Vasser and Bobby Rahal on an impressive win. The last two laps were an old-fashioned shootout, giving the Fontana fans their money's worth. It was a great race from start to finish, and we were pleased the Bridgestone Potenzas played such an important role in the caliber of racing we saw today."
