CHAMPCAR/CART: Fittipaldi, Andretti in top ten in practice at Fontana

CHRISTIAN FITTIPALDI, #11 Big Kmart/Route 66 Ford Lola:

This will be his fourth start at Fontana. His highest finish here is third in last year's race where he set the record for fastest lap. Has led a total of 37 laps here. Finished ninth in 1997; finished seventh in 1998; and finished third in 1999.

"The car is very good in both configurations - qualifying trim and race trim. I'm very happy with our progress today. This is the first time on a Super Speedway since the Michigan race because we didn't test here. The track was a little green because of the rain and everything but I am very happy about how competitive the car is right now. We haven't won a race yet this season but have been very competitive. This is our last chance to win in 2000 and the $1 million prize money would help make it worth the wait."

MICHAEL ANDRETTI, # 6 Big Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Ford-Cosworth Lola

Will be his 4th start at Fontana. He has led in all three of his previous races here but has retired with problems all three times. Led 36 laps in 1997 before his car overheated while leading; crashed while in second place after leading 44 laps in 1998 near the end of the race; led 62 laps in 1999 before an oil fire took him out of the lead and the race. Has led a total of 142 laps at the California Speedway.

"The car is good in race trim. At the first of the session we ran in qualifying trim and the car felt all right but the engine broke so when we got back out in the back-up car, we just worked on the race set-up. We didn't test here and the car was good right out of the box so we are pretty happy. There is no need to run the car into the ground trying to make it better when it is already good. This race is really important to us since it is our last one together. Everyone is focused on winning this race."
