CHAMPCAR/CART: Fittipaldi, Andretti in top eight Mid-Ohio qualifying

CHRISTIAN FITTIPALDI, #11 Big Kmart/Route 66 Ford Lola:

"There is not a lot more in the car. We would have to bolt new things on the car to get any more out of it. It wasn't a perfect lap but it was close. I'm happy with the car. I think the race will come to us. If I was in the first two rows I would be a little happier but this is the best car I have ever had at Mid-Ohio so that makes me happy. We have struggled at this place the past few years. Apart from the first session where I sat out for 20 minutes due to engine problems, I have run in the top-five in all of the sessions, which is pretty consistent. Many times, you run well in the first day and go backwards on the second. We ran pretty good so far. I really want to have a good race here and win some races this season. The Championship is out of limits now so I want to win a race or two before the season is over. It's not like we have been a second off the pace this year. We have been competitive but haven't scored a lot of points in the races for one reason or another."

MICHAEL ANDRETTI, # 6 Big Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Ford-Cosworth Lola
TIME: 1:06:338

* NOTES: This will be his 16th start at Mid-Ohio. He has won two races (1990, 1991); three poles (1990, 1991, 1992); scored two third-place finishes (1989, 1996) and eight top-10 finishes. Has led a total of 188 laps at Mid-Ohio. In six of his 15 starts he retired with mechanical failures. He leads the CART point standings by 22 over Roberto Moreno who has 98. The last time he led the Championship standings this late in the season was in 1991 when he won his lone CART Championship.

"I was sliding around a lot. Christian did pretty well though. I'm glad to be in the top-10. Now I have to work on getting in the top-five in the race. Gil is going to be tough. It's hard to pass here so we will have to make up some spots in the pits. The Big Kmart/Texaco/Havoline guys have been great in making up positions for me in the races and that would definitely help us here. It will just be a race of hanging in there and bringing home some points toward the Championship."
