Da Matta Wins the Race, but de Ferran Wins da Title Once Again
Cristiano da Matta pushed his car to the limit and pulled away to the victory today, but fellow Brazilian Gil de Ferran locked up his second consecutive FedEx Championship Series crown by placing fourth. Da Matta's win is the third of his CART career, all coming on Firestone tires. Both of de Ferran's titles have also come with Firestone, after he spent five seasons toiling on the former competitor's tires.
"We have plenty of congratulations to pass around today," said Al Speyer, Bridgestone/Firestone Motorsports Director. "Cristiano da Matta drove an excellent race to win, testing the limits of his tires because he knew they would respond for him. And we're extremely pleased for Gil de Ferran and Team Penske wrapping up their second straight championship. It's difficult enough to win one championship in this series; to command two in a row says something about their program. Firestone is proud to have played an integral role in those title runs. We were thrilled to start working with the legendary Team Penske organization in 2000 and it's immediately led to back-to-back championships. Today marks Firestone's 101st CART victory and sixth consecutive CART championship, two more milestones in which we take great pride."
Driver/Team Owner Quotes
Cristiano da Matta, Newman/Haas Racing Toyota/Lola/Firestone: "The tires just went so well the whole day. I kept up a very, very fast pace and all three stints I was pushing very hard. I was very pleased with the way things went. The car was very good, the engine worked well, the tires were very good. It was one of those days when everything went our way."
Roger Penske, owner, Team Penske: "The team came together even stronger this year to win the championship before the last race of the season. It's just fantastic. Certainly the Firestone tires have been outstanding. We ran them without a question all season long and it's been a big part of our winning."
