In His 100th Start, Moreno Earns Firestone's 100th CART Pole
Roberto Moreno celebrated his 100th Championship Auto Racing Teams start in grand style, driving today to the 100th pole position for Firestone Racing since the tire maker entered CART six years ago. Moreno, driving the Patrick Racing Toyota/Reynard on Firestone Firehawks, collected a lap of 109.257 mph around the streets of Surfers Paradise. It is his second career pole - both on Firestone tires - the first coming last year at Cleveland.
"Just a week after winning our 100th CART race, Firestone is proud to lay claim today to our 100th pole position in the series," said Al Speyer, Bridgestone/Firestone Motorsports Director. "It's another indication of the dedication our personnel have in developing and maintaining the best race tires in any series. Remember, the first 61 of those poles came in direct competition with another manufacturer, with a success rate of nearly 70 percent. It's also appropriate that Patrick Racing play a major role in this milestone. Pat Patrick's team earned our first CART race win back in 1995 and our 100th pole today. We couldn't be more pleased. Tire performance has been exceptional again this weekend and we expect it to contribute to another exciting race tomorrow here in paradise."
A total of 24 drivers have captured pole positions on Firestone Firehawks since the tire maker entered CART in 1995. The list of winners includes (with number of poles won): Juan Montoya (13), Dario Franchitti (10), Alex Zanardi (10), Gil de Ferran (9), Helio Castroneves (8), Jimmy Vasser (7), Kenny Brack (6), Greg Moore (5), Scott Pruett (5), Mauricio Gugelmin (4), Bryan Herta (4), Patrick Carpentier (2), Tony Kanaan (2), Roberto Moreno (2), Max Papis (2), Andre Ribeiro (2), Alex Tagliani (2), Michael Andretti (1), Raul Boesel (1), Adrian Fernandez (1), Christian Fittipaldi (1), Parker Johnstone (1), Bruno Junqueira (1), Paul Tracy (1).
Roberto Moreno, Patrick Racing Toyota/Reynard/Firestone: "I am so glad to be a part of Firestone's 100th pole and that the Visteon/Patrick Racing team made possible for me to be a part of it. It's also my 100th start in a CART race, so I am very happy to be a part of it all. The Firestone tires are very good. They have good grip for the first seven laps actually, then they come down a little bit and then stay the same. We saved a lot of tires with not practicing yesterday, so we're looking good for the race. Once again Firestone brought superb tires that are very consistent for this race."
