Cooking up a baker's dozen: Since it joined the series in 1995, Firestone has won every pole and race in CART-sanctioned 500-mile events. The streak stands at 12 consecutive 500-mile pole positions and race wins heading into this weekend. Firestone supplies every entrant in the Marlboro 500 field, so a 13th pole and race triumph are assured whenever the checkered flag waves.
Al Speyer, Bridgestone/Firestone Motorsports Director, on the tire
selection for California Speedway:
"The sheer length of these races, coupled with the intense speeds and loads generated by the Champ cars, make the 500-mile races the most demanding test of a race tire. All teams and drivers want that added bit of grip necessary to keep the throttle down and reach for those extra couple miles per hour. At the same time, they want the performance characteristics of the tires not to change over the course of a fuel run at those piercing speeds. It's the ultimate trade-off for a tire supplier: grip and speed versus consistency and durability. Happily, it's a balance Firestone has been able to strike exceptionally well since we entered CART six seasons ago. The proof is in the pudding, as they say, since Firestone has won each and every CART 500-miler in which our tires have competed. The first seven of those 12 straight 500-mile wins came against direct tire competition before our former opponent bailed, due in great part to the overwhelming success we achieved in these marquee events. The unsurpassed consistency and durability that the Firehawk racing radials provide have played a pivotal role in the unforgettable races we've seen the past few years at both California and Michigan. That's why Firestone Racing is pleased to have on hand this weekend the same tire specification used last year at California as well as earlier this season at Michigan. We're confident that, one more time, the tires will serve as the platform for another memorable CART 500-mile event with yet another Firestone-equipped car and driver in victory lane."
