The Firestone Racing program announced last week that it would sponsor the first annual "Bobby Rahal Award of Excellence," to be presented each year prior to the Medic Drug Grand Prix of Cleveland Presented by Star Bank. The inaugural award will go to Rahal (Miller Lite Reynard Ford), who is retiring as a FedEx Championship Series driver at the conclusion of the season and won the first-ever Cleveland Grand Prix in 1982. Rahal is a native of nearby Medina and maintains Team Rahal headquarters in Hilliard, Ohio, just outside Columbus. "We are delighted to present the Bobby Rahal award, an honor celebrating the best of motorsports competition," said Bob Johnson, vice president of Bridgestone/Firestone Technology Company in Akron.

"Bobby has earned the respect of his peers and the admiration of fans through many seasons of outstanding competition. He brings to the sport and intense level of spirit and character. In the global racing community, he is considered one of the finest gentlemen to ever compete. We're thrilled to honor him as the first recipient, and to be part of this new award that will recognize other greats in the future." Rahal, a three-time PPG Cup winner (1986, '87, '92), is in his first season campaigning Firestone tires in the FedEx Championship Series. Firestone has won 19 of the last 20 events, dating to Greg Moore's (Player's/Indeck Reynard Mercedes) triumph at Milwaukee last season. Rahal will be presented with his award at the Cleveland Grand Prix Ball Thursday night.
