HOMESTEAD, Florida (January 25, 2001) -- Fernandez Racing concluded its first oval test session following a successful run by Shinji Nakano today at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Florida.
Nakano took over driving duties of teammate Adrian Fernandez's #51 Tecate/Quaker State/Telmex Honda/Reynard after experiencing gearbox problems with his #52 car yesterday.
Nakano ran 160 miles on the 1.5-mile oval under temperatures in the low 70s and slightly windier conditions, recording a best time of 26.7 seconds.
"We had a good day," said Nakano. "We made some little changes, and the car went better and better and better. I think we found a pretty good setup for this type of track, and I am very happy with that.
"This was only my second time to work with my new engineer, Martin Pare. I know his way to set up the car more now than before, and I think it is going to be a good partnership. I am still learning all the names of the people on the team. I think it will be more difficult remembering all the names for the team than driving!
"Unfortunately we had the problem with my car yesterday, and Adrian gave me the chance to drive his car. Everything went well, and I am very happy."
The test marked the first time that the entire team has traveled together, and team owner/driver Fernandez spent his day on pit lane, watching the activities and spending time with his new teammate.
"Shinji did a very good job," said Fernandez. "He has similar feelings of what is happening with the car and we compared a lot of notes. Everyone on the team is working well together and I am very excited. We get better and better each time we go out."
"We had a successful day," said Tom Anderson, owner and team manager. "We experimented with mechanical and aero changes, and Shinji was happy with the balance. I am very pleased with the day."
Fernandez Racing will return to Florida in two weeks time for a test session at Sebring International Raceway on February 7 and 8.
