CHAMPCAR/CART: Fernandez Racing Toronto qualifying

Adrian Fernandez, Owner/Driver -- #51 Tecate/Quaker State/Telmex Honda/Reynard/Firestone:

Qualified: 7th

"We had a better car than what we showed in qualifying. On my first set of tires the red flag came out. If I could have finished that lap, it would have been a tenth quicker. I could never put a lap together with the second set of tires. There was a car in front of me and I don't know if he was held up by somebody else or what, but it was like a chain reaction and I had to back off and so did the cars behind me. None of us really got a good lap on new tires. I think I really could have taken another few tenths off of my time. We are not that far from the pole and we could have been a lot closer if we would have had a clean run at the end. My tires were going off and I did 58.2. It's a shame for Shinji because he was running very strong this morning and unfortunately he had a problem and didn't really show what he could do. Tomorrow is another day. We're starting strong and we've been consistent. Hopefully it will be our day."

Shinji Nakano, #52 Avex/Alpine Honda/Reynard/Firestone:

Qualified: 26th

"It was my mistake. It was cold tires. I locked up the front and hit the tire barrier. Unfortunately Max Wilson was behind me and he couldn't stop. He hit me pretty hard. I had to change to my backup car. I didn't have an opportunity to find a clear lap in the spare car. It's a shame. I feel sorry for the team because the car was really good. Let's hope for tomorrow."

Tom Anderson, Owner/Team Manager:

"As it is sometimes with a two-car team, one's good and one's not good. Both cars were running well today, and I was happy with the practice session. In the qualifying, the #52 side was late getting out there and late getting ready. I think that put more pressure on Shinji than he really needed, and I think that added to the incident. I'm very pleased with the #51 car although we were hoping for a little bit more. We could have used a little bit more traction, but all in all I think Adrian can win from seventh. Obviously we will be on a different pit stop strategy tomorrow with Shinji, and hopefully we can make something out of both deals tomorrow."
