SEBRING, Florida (January 10, 2001) -- Fernandez Racing wrapped up a second day of testing at Sebring International Raceway with Adrian Fernandez making sizable gains to post the unofficial best time of the day behind the wheel of the #51 Tecate/Quaker State/Telmex Honda/Reynard.
Fernandez was one of nine drivers, including Michael Andretti, Tony Kanaan, Roberto Moreno, Bryan Herta, Cristiano da Matta, Patrick Carpentier, Tora Takagi and Dale Coyne Racing's Andre Couto, who were testing at the 1.65-mile road course in preparation for the start of 2001 CART FedEx Championship Series season in March.
Fernandez logged 68 laps under cool but milder conditions, improving his time from yesterday by 2.6 seconds with a best lap of 51.1.
"We are becoming more comfortable with the new car," said Tom Anderson, owner and team manager. "The chassis reacts very similar to last year's car. Honda has made large improvements with the new engine and CART's new 37" rule*. I was moderately satisfied with the day. We were able to establish a good baseline to lead into Shinji's test tomorrow which we are all looking forward to."
"This is a big improvement from yesterday," said Fernandez. "We are still learning as a team, and to be the fastest at the end of the day after the problems we had Tuesday really shows the potential that is here. We still have a long way to go, but we are all working hard and the guys are pumped up. It's very exciting. I'm very pleased with our results today. Tomorrow we will work on getting Shinji up to speed."
Nakano will make his first track appearance with Fernandez Racing behind the wheel of the #51 machine, concluding the final day of testing for the team at Sebring.
