DETROIT (June 30, 2000) - For one lucky Champ Car fan, meeting their favorite driver might become a reality through the "WorldCom Most Popular Driver Award Sweepstakes." Voting begins this weekend for the season's favorite driver, and each ballot also offers the fan a chance to win a trip for two to the season-ending race at the California Speedway.
Race enthusiasts from around the country may participate in the contest, which will name the fans' choice for the Most Popular Driver in the 2000 FedEx Championship Series. Voting runs July 1 through September 18. Fans can register on both the CART and WorldCom web sites (cart.com or worldcomracing.com) by completing the official entry form. Entries can also be made by filling out the ballot found in Champ Car magazine, Championship Racing magazine, Racer magazine and in all event programs through the September 17 Motorola 300 race at Gateway International Raceway.
"This is a great chance for Champ Car fans to get involved and vote for their favorite driver," said Pat Leahy, senior vice president of marketing for CART. "The partnership with WorldCom has allowed us to provide the winner with a trip to the FedEx Championship Series season finale in California, as well as participate in the annual awards banquet and meet the season's Most Popular Driver."
Fans entering the national sweepstakes will receive a chance to win a trip for two to Los Angeles to attend the 500 Presented by Toyota on October 29 at the California Speedway. The weekend includes round-trip coach airfare for two, three nights' hotel accommodations, mid-size car rental and tickets to the race. The winner will also attend the 2000 FedEx Championship Series awards banquet to present a $25,000 check in the name of the winning driver to the driver's charity of choice.
"WorldCom recognizes that CART has some of the most fascinating motorsports personalities in the world. So, what better way to showcase this aspect of CART racing than to team up with CART and give the fans a chance to vote for the most popular driver of 2000?" said Andy Deas, director of WorldCom Sports Marketing. "We like to develop promotional programs that give fans an experience they can get nowhere else. The key ingredient to this promotion is that one lucky fan will have the chance to attend the CART banquet and present the Most Popular Driver award to the winning driver. They can't get such an opportunity anywhere else, except with WorldCom and CART."
Last year, Juan Montoya of Target/Chip Ganassi Racing received the inaugural WorldCom Most Popular Driver Award in balloting by fans. Montoya was the 1999 FedEx Championship Series Champion, the Rookie of the Year, and was also the top vote-getter on the five-member CART All-Star Team. _CART-
