Fittipaldi Teams Up With ISL To Promote Rio 200 Emerson Fittipaldi Speedway in Rio.
(February 8, 1999) - Racing great and Rio 200 race promoter Emerson Fittipaldi today announced that he would join forces with international sports marketing leader ISL in promoting the Rio 200 - round five of the 1999 CART FedEx Championship Series.
"I am delighted to announce this partnership. ISL's experience and resources will help us to make the Rio 200 a truly great event", said Fittipaldi.
ISL is best known as FIFA's marketing and media partner for the World Cup but last year announced a nine-year $ 200-plus million agreement to become the exclusive worldwide marketing agent for CART, the governing body of Champ Car racing and the FedEx Championship Series.
ISL CEO Heinz P. Schurtenberger said, "We are truly proud to be associated with Emerson Fittipaldi and the Rio 200. Not only is Emerson one of the great champions in all of sport, he is also a true professional and we share his vision of making the Rio 200 one of the most important sports events in Latin America."
Fittipaldi and ISL will be equal partners in promoting the Rio 200 over at least the next four years. ISL will bring huge experience in global sports marketing and a client list of blue-chip international corporations such as Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Ericsson and MasterCard.
The new venture also announced the appointment of Challenge Sports Marketing and Entertainment to coordinate the marketing and commercialization of the Rio 200 within Brazil.
"This new partnership with the world's biggest sports marketing company (ISL) and with the marketing support of Challenge marks the break-through for our ambition to take auto racing in Brazil to an international level and ultimately put the sport level with football in terms of interest", said Fittipaldi.
Fittipaldi is one of the greatest racing drivers in history. He is the only driver to have won two F1 World Championships (in 1972 and 1974) a CART World Series Championship (1989) and the Indianapolis 500 twice, (in 1989 and 1993). Fittipaldi also is an extremely successful businessman, with a line of licensed merchandise stretching from wheels to sun glasses to cigars. He is also widely regarded as the man who popularized Champ Car racing in Brazil - first through his exploits on the track and more recently as the holder of the Brazilian TV rights for the sport. He serves as the promoter of the Rio 200 for the first time in 1999.
