ELKHART LAKE, Wisconsin (August 16, 2002)-- Team Motorola and driver Michael Andretti were a bit disappointed after the opening qualifying session for this weekend's Motorola 220 when their provisional qualifying effort left them 10th on the grid. "I just didn't get the best out of my final laps today," said Andretti. "We went out a bit early and then the track kept getting better and better." Andretti's effort of 1:43.431 seconds left them 10th on the grid but there is still an opportunity in tomorrow's qualifying session to improve their position. "We've been hearing rumors of rain for Saturday," said general manager Kim Green. "So today's effort was very important just in case those rumors become fact."
Cristiano daMatta is on provisional pole with a time of 1:42.640 seconds, while Bruno Junqueira was second quick at 1:42.744 seconds and Michael's technical partner, Dario Franchitti rounded out the top three qualifiers with a time of 1:42.990 seconds. Michael's other technical partner Paul Tracy was eighth with a time of 1:43.287 seconds. Team Motorola will resume practice tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. with final qualifying to follow at 1:45 p.m. CT. Sunday's 60-lap race is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. and will be shown live on SpeedChannel television.
Michael Andretti -- #39 Honda-Lola-Bridgestone "The car wasn't bad we just went out too early on our last set of tires, which was probably my fault, and the track was getting better and better after we'd completed our run. On my last lap, Kenny Brack was slowing down in front of me so I had to back off and didn't get the best out of it, which was disappointing because the track was much better. This session was just frustrating overall because I think we have a car that could have been much further up the grid. Hopefully, we'll make some more changes tonight and be better for tomorrow."
Sunday will be Michael's 302nd start of his career In 2001, . Michael started 7th and finished 2nd in this race Michael leads . all active Champ Car drivers with 301 race starts, 42 wins, 32 . poles and 6,564 laps led .

Kim Green -- General Manager "Today's qualifying is very important since we're getting rumors that it's going to rain tomorrow. I think we made a lot of improvements on the race car between practice and qualifying. Perhaps if we had taken more of a gamble in staying out on the race track until the very last minute to complete our run we might of had quicker times this afternoon. This track is typically one that gets better lap after lap. But the risk you take there is the possibility of a red flag in the final minutes of qualifying and you haven't really gotten the best out of the race car. Michael is disappointed because he felt we had a top five car today but if the weather cooperates tomorrow, we have a good chance for that to happen."
