Franchitti third in provisional qualifying at Road America
ELKHART LAKE, Wisconsin - Team KOOL Green driver Dario Franchitti earned the third quickest time of the day during Friday's provisional qualifying session for this weekend's Motorola 220 at Road America. Franchitti posted a best lap of 1:42.990 seconds (141.497 mph) around the picturesque 4.048-mile road course in Elkhart Lake. The Scot's teammate Paul Tracy, who was sidelined from the morning practice session due to difficulties with gear ratios and steering, was eighth fastest in afternoon qualifying. Tracy recorded a best lap of 1:43.287 seconds (141.090 mph).
Cristiano da Matta earned a championship point after recording the best time of the day to win the provisional pole. The Brazilian rang up a lap of 1:42.640 seconds (141.980 mph) and guaranteed himself a front row starting position for Sunday's race. Bruno Junqueira was second quickest, posting a best lap of 1:41.744 seconds (141.836 mph).
Tomorrow's CART FedEx Champ Car schedule starts off with practice at 10:00 a.m. CDT and will be followed by the final qualifying at 1:45 p.m. Speed Channel will carry qualifying live starting at 2:30 p.m. EDT.
Dario Franchitti -- #27 KOOL Honda-Lola-Bridgestone
"It's always good to be near the front. It was a bit frustrating in my first couple of laps; I made a couple of mistakes. The conditions of the track were also not great, there were a lot of guys running off and then dragging dirt back on to it. On my last lap, which was actually my quickest, there were a couple of moments when I actually had the KOOL car sideways on the track because of the dirt. We've still got some work to do, so we can make a run and catch the guys in front."
Kyle Moyer, Team KOOL Green Team Manager:
"We wanted to get a good time in today because there's rain in the forecast for tomorrow. Right now the car is a lot better. We struggled a bit on our first set of tires with too much understeer, but we managed to fix that. We're pretty close to where we want to be. Hopefully it will be dry tomorrow and we'll get another run at it."
Paul Tracy - #26 KOOL Honda-Lola-Bridgestone
"I'm disappointed a bit for Team KOOL Green. On my last lap, which was actually my quick lap, I was blocked by (Michel) Jourdain but when I came in we were in fourth position. Everyone else was running their last laps too and by the time they were all back in the pits, I dropped down to eighth. There's more in the car. We just looked at some of the data now and I was three-tenths of a second up on my best lap. If I hadn't gotten held up, I would have been second in qualifying. We're pretty close car-wise right now; we just need to do a couple of little things to make it a bit better in the corners, the carousel corner in particular. But we'll get it sorted out and get back on it tomorrow."
John Anderson, Team KOOL Green Race Consultant
"We had a terrible session this morning. We didn't have the correct ratios in place for seventh gear. And we also had problems with the steering. We changed a lot during the morning practice, which limited our track time and didn't give Paul a chance to put in a good lap. Team KOOL Green also made a lot of changes between sessions and we were actually looking quite good out there in qualifying, with Paul running up as high as fourth. We had a little problem with understeer, we could actually see him losing time in the carousel corner and we were able to deal with it when he came in. This is where we wanted to be this morning, but at least now we've got something to work with."
