MICHAEL ANDRETTI -6- K Mart/Texaco/Havoline Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 1st - "Even though we are P1 now I still think there is a lot more in the car. This was definitely not the quickest we can go and it isn't the quickest the other guys can go either. That last red flag really hurt us. I think we should defiantly be in the 40s. Last year was the first time I got the pole here. I love this race track and if you ask anyone competing here this weekend I think they will say the same thing. I hope we can keep it up for tomorrow because it is going to take a lot more to get the pole tomorrow." ARE YOU STARTING TO FEEL THE NEED TO PUT PRESSURE ON MONTOYA AS YOU CHASE THE CHAMPIONSHIP? "I think we were capable of being there all the way. There were a few times that really hurt us in the championship though such as Milwaukee. We just need to keep chipping away at Montoya's lead and hopefully we can be there at the end."

CHRISTIAN FITTIPALDI -11- Big K Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 7th - "Gugelmen basically had a problem on one of our hot laps. I found him right in the middle of the straight and I was coming up on him at about 210 mph and then you are like 'what do you do?' Do you go right or left because you don't know what he is going to do. I am a little disappointed but we still have tomorrow. I think we made some positive improvements from this morning. I really didn't get a good crack at it but I am happy that Michael is up there and I think tomorrow we can stick both cars on the front row."

ADRIAN FERNANDEZ -40- Tecate/Quaker State Ford - Qualified 17th - "I don't think we made the right decision on the downforce level. Unfortunately that session was not very good for us." IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU GUYS HAVE A GOOD IDEA OF WHAT IT IS YOU NEED TO FIX. . . "I think so. We are a little off the pace right now. There is a lot to be done and a lot to be fixed. We can go quicker but I had to come in because the car was very loose and then we made an adjustment with the downforce and went back out but I could not really put a lap together."

P.J. JONES -20- Visteon Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 16th - "We were having some problems with the brakes today. Overall the car is not quite there yet. It's not like we could just unload it and have the setup. We don't really know where we should be today. We definitely made progress but so did everyone else. We would have been a bit faster if Castro-Neves hadn't lost a motor. I got into his oil and I got a little sideways and it cost me a couple tenths."

BRYAN HERTA -8- Shell Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 19th - "This isn't the way we wanted to start the weekend. I feel this place owes me one after the results we had over the past few years. I am confident that we can get the car back up to speed and get us a solid starting spot for tomorrow." MAX PAPIS -7- Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 10th - "We were not having the day that I had hoped. We tested very well here and I came with quite a bit of confidence but we still don't quite have the car setup right. We made some improvement at the end of the session which put us up to tenth but at then I got into some oil from Castro-Neves' car and spun. I didn't hurt the car too bad but at the same time I feel bad because I made some more work for my guys tonight."

MICHEL JOURDAIN, JR -19- Herdez Viva Mexico Ford-Cosworth Qualified 12th - YOU HAD A SOLID RUN TODAY . . . "Yeah it's okay. We are improving. I hope we can keep it up and improve even more for tomorrow. I think we can do much better because a lot of things went wrong today. Over the last four races we should have done better but we need to continue to improve."
