Potenza Race Tires Supplied: Bridgestone delivered more than 1,000 tires for use this weekend. All were produced at the Bridgestone/Firestone Technical Center in Akron, Ohio.
* Dry-condition ("slick") tires: Each car receives eight sets to use throughout practice, qualifying and the race. The tire specification this weekend is one of three road course designs that Bridgestone Motorsport engineers have developed for use in 2002. This Potenza spec is the most durable of the three road course versions. Road America is the only track in 2002 that will see this tire compound/construction combination.
* Wet-condition ("rain") tires: Bridgestone supplies each car up to four new sets of rain tires per weekend on road and street courses, as needed. In addition, teams may bring two additional sets of rain tires per car that they received at a previous event but did not use. Since Bridgestone is utilizing a single wet-tire spec at all road/street events in 2002, tires can be carried over to another weekend without a performance variance. CART's decision permitting teams to carry the additional rain sets assures drivers a sufficient number should wet conditions persist on a race weekend.
The Official Tire of CART: Bridgestone joins the FedEx Championship Series in 2002 as the Official Tire of CART and supplies all teams with Potenza racing radials. While it is Bridgestone's first year in this series, the tire manufacturer boasts an enviable racing heritage spanning four decades.
Quote from Al Speyer, Bridgestone Motorsport Executive Director: "Road America is the favorite track among most of the CART drivers because it is a traditional road course in every sense of the word. It is scenic, has long high-speed straightaways and fast turns, elevation changes and many passing areas. It is reminiscent of some of the old-style European circuits. Because of its sheer length and the speeds achieved, however, it is a tremendous challenge for a tire supplier. That's why the Bridgestone Motorsport engineers have created a tire formula especially for this track, and this track only. The Potenzas must stand up to the punishment they will absorb each and every four-mile lap, dissipate the intense internal tire heat generated by such long yet fast laps, and still provide the unsurpassed grip and durability for which the Bridgestone tires are already renowned in their first year with the FedEx Championship Series. We're confident these Potenza tires will provide all that's necessary for another successful race weekend."
