West Edmonton Mall Grand Prix of Edmonton Second Qualifying Session Quotes
A.J. Allmendinger #10 RuSPORT Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone: "It feels amazing, especially after what happened last weekend. I think if I could only do four laps and have the pole like I did today, that would be easy. But, you know, the session obviously was crazy.Everybody had to wait until the end to put a lap in. It just worked out in our favor that there were a lot of incidents. You know, it will be exciting, the first time starting from the pole and leading in turn one here."
Justin Wilson #9 RuSPORT Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone: "Obviously it was a bit disappointing, not how we wanted to finish the session. From my point of view, I went out behind Sebastien. I was quicker than him, so I backed off to leave a gap, and let Timo get past me. That was fine. I just pulled over, let him go. And then I seemed to catch him up pretty easily in the first three or four corners. Into turn five, he slid in there, dropped back, missed the apex. Going into six, he seemed to slow up, hug the inside. I just presumed he was letting me through. Went casually up the inside into seven and found out that wasn't his plan.We came together at the apex of seven. That ended the session. It was a little bit confusing from my point of view. Like I said, I thought he was leaving the door open. That wasn't what happened."
Paul Tracy #3 Indeck Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone: "The car was much better today and I think we had a good shot at being quickest, but the track wasn't as good today due to the damp conditions so we didn't really have any shot at Pole. The Red Flags kept coming out so we didn't really get an opportunity to get on the front row, but the car is going to be fast for the race and we'll see how things work out. I do want to say congratulations to A.J. and the RuSport Team for a great weekend."
Oriol Servia #2 PacifiCare Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone: "I think we made some improvements with the car overnight and had something for the competition. It was our best Friday since I have been with Newman/Haas so I do believe we had something for the competition but we weren't able to show it because of the slower conditions today and the red flags. I am confident that it will be an extremely demanding race both physically and mentally. I think this is a very different race than what we are used to; the track is completely different from anywhere we go. After three laps, it's really hard and to do 88 laps with no mistakes will be a challenge."
Cristiano da Matta #21 Bell-Micro Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone: "It is just a shame for the Edmonton fans and the Bell Micro/PKV Racing team that we could not get a full qualifying session in today. Sometimes things like this happen on the street circuits. If you have bad weather and then some people make mistakes you just can't get the proper time on the track. We were not going to be able to go faster than yesterday, but we had a good car for today's qualifying session and I think we had a shot at quick time for the day. That would have put us on the front row and gotten us a championship point. Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way. Mostly, I feel bad for the fans. The Bell Micro/PKV Racing team is starting fifth and I think we have a good race car, so I am looking forward to tomorrow's race."
Alex Tagliani #15 Aussie Vineyards Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone: "The weather certainly didn't help today because we made some improvements overnight which could have improved my time. We had a good opportunity to move up in today's qualifying session and the guys on the team were very careful in letting me know about the oncoming traffic when I exited the pits and I let a couple of guys by. I was going through the chicane and suddenly Mario (Dominquez) came up and -- bang -- ran straight into me. It is only a one car chicane through there so I was just minding my business coming up to speed. I don't know whether I accidentally blocked his lap, but that is no reason to run straight into me. The biggest problem for our team is we don't have a spare Lola at the moment so I have to be careful to protect the only car I have and drive with my head. It really scares me because when something like this happens because if I badly damage the car, I have to jump in the Reynard chassis and I really don't want to do that. Luckily there wasn't a lot of damage and we will be fine for tomorrow. We have some more stuff to try in the warm-up that we didn't get a chance to check today but hopefully there will be no umbrellas in the stands tomorrow and we will have a good race."
Jimmy Vasser #12 Gulfstream/PKV Racing Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone: "I am really impressed by the fans here in Edmonton. They came out in the rain and filled the place. I just wish we would have given them a better show. The Gulfstream/PKV Racing team was looking forward to having a good qualifying run today, but because of the red flags we just couldn't get our laps in. It is really disappointing, but mostly I am disappointed for the fans. The good thing is it looks and sounds like they are still having a lot of fun. I am looking forward to the race tomorrow. I like the track. It is fast and challenging and the fans are very enthusiastic. The weather looks like it is going to be good tomorrow, the stands are going to full, the fence line will be packed and I think Champ Car is going to put a great show."
Mario Dominguez #7 Indeck Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone: "We were just getting up to speed when I came up behind Alex Tagliani. He was running quickly down the front straight and through Turn 1, but as he got into Turn 3 he almost came to a stop and I didn't have anyplace to go. I guess he decided to get some space from the car in front, but you're not supposed to balk somebody on a fast lap and I was on a fast lap. I thought for a moment he was going to move over for me but he didn't and I clipped his rear tire with my nose. We've had some bad luck lately and it's time our luck changed. We'll come back tomorrow and see if we can't turn things around."
Timo Glock #8 DHL Global Mail Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone: "We were not too bad during practice today, running mostly in the top three as the track was still a bit wet from all the rain this morning. We went out for our first run in qualifying on black Bridgestone tires and immediately the red flag came out, the same story this whole weekend as trying to get in a run is impossible. During the end of the qualifying session, we went out on the Reds (Bridgestone Option Tires) and got in one warm up lap. Wilson let me pass him, so I was ready to start a hot lap. As I was turning into Turn Seven, Wilson and I made contact. I had no idea what he was doing. There was absolutely no room for him to pass me in that corner. It was a stupid mistake on his part and it messed up my qualifying session this afternoon."
Sebastien Bourdais #1 McDonald's Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone: "We didn't run much today due to the conditions. We only did minimal laps in the practice and only four laps in qualifying due to the red flags and obviously today we accomplished nothing since the session ended without much happening. I was pretty happy with the car yesterday; we were the fastest in the first session but my mistake in qualifying really hurt us. We were hoping to improve our starting position today but could not really stretch our legs. If we could have set the fastest lap time in the session we could have moved up to a second place start but we weren't able to give it much of a shot because of all of the red flags. Realistically it will be difficult to pass in the race. We are going to have to be very patient and work very hard to move the McDonald's car to the front and collect some good points."
Nelson Philippe #34 Wellbox Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone: "Saturday's qualifying was weird, a lot of guys crashing everywhere, a very weird day.During practice we were very fast, 7th quickest; so I have a lot of confidence in the car. We went out for qualifying, knowing that it was not going to be faster, so we did laps to get some data. The car was a bit loose so we will need to work on that. Tomorrow it will be a long race, very physical for us. I'm sure we have a top ten car; we will see what happens tomorrow. Bourdais is in front of me and I will follow him."
Ryan Hunter-Reay #31 Cytomax Sport Drink/Rocketsports Ford- Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone: "I think that our team is going to have to do a rain dance tonight and tomorrow morning. Both Rocketsports cars were quick in the wet conditions today. Timo (Glock) and I were consistently in the top five in the wet. However, when the track dried out, we were back outside of the top ten. The main problem that we are facing is the rear of the #31 Cytomax Sport Drink car is very loose, which is holding us back and not allowing us to run better times. That is something that we will work on tonight, as we prepare for the race tomorrow afternoon."
Andrew Ranger #27 Tide/Mi-Jack Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone: "My car was much better today, at some parts of the circuit I did improve and I'm going much faster now. Not a good starting position, but in Monterrey I started 14th and finished 2nd. so we will see tomorrow. It's a long race; we need some good pit-stops. Racing in front of all the Canadian fans is a great feeling. I'm looking forward to put a good show tomorrow."
Marcus Marshall #5 Aussie Vineyards Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone: "The good thing is my car is nice and straight but there were a lot of guys out there running into things in the session which kept bringing out the red flag. The bad thing is I didn't really get a shot to improve my time at all, so that was pretty frustrating. The track was really slippery when I went out in the practice session and car had a lot of understeer, but once the track started to dry with a bit of traffic, it certainly got faster and faster. When you go out it takes a couple of laps to get the tires up to temperature, but the red flag kept coming out just as I was about to take a shot at it. Nobody really got a chance to improve. Hopefully, all the bad weather is behind us now and we will have a good clean race out there. The reaction from the fans continues to amaze us all -- the weather was miserable this morning, but the stands were still packed this afternoon."
