Heylen Garners First Finish and Completes it with a Top Ten Performance

In the process of chasing his first finish of the 2007 season, Jan Heylen (#34 Champ Car Grand Prix of Belgium / Cosworth / DP01 / Bridgestone) was not content to just complete the race but earned himself a strong top-ten finish in the Rexall Grand Prix of Edmonton on Sunday. Heylen's race began with a cautious start which dropped him back to 14th in the first corner. He chased Dan Clarke during the early part of the race while trying to maintain speed and keep out of any trouble. Jan took his first pit stop during the first yellow flag was able to work up to 12th position because of his quick pit stop. However, eventually the fast pace in the front of the field caused Heylen to go a lap down but through pit strategy during a yellow caution period, Jan was able to catch back up to the lead lap.

As the race wore on, Jan's lack of experience with a larger number of race laps came through. This coupled with the fact that Edmonton is an extremely physically demanding track led to exhaustion for the Belgian driver. This resulted in slower lap times but after battling to ninth place on a yellow flag restart, he lost the position to Clarke. From there, Heylen was able to maintain his tenth place through to the finish. Heylen now is looking to use his experience from Edmonton to have an even better result in the upcoming San Jose Grand Prix.

Jan Heylen Quote

"We're of course very happy to finally see our first finish of the year," said Heylen. "That on its own is an accomplishment for me and the Conquest team. All of our pit stops went really well and the strategy came together for us. A top-ten finish for our first completion is not bad. The second half of the race was pretty tough because as I predicted it ended up being a pretty physical race for me. This will be the first opportunity for us to get a complete set of race data so we will sit down and analyze all of the information before San Jose. It was a great team effort from everyone and I'm pleased to have my first finish under my belt."

Eric Bachelart Quote

"It was great to see the #34 Grand Prix of Belgium in Zolder car in the top ten at the end of the race today," said Eric Bachelart, Conquest Racing Team Owner. "By the end we were struggling to keep the lap times up to speed but we were fortunate that we could adjust our pit strategy and jump back up to the lead lap. However, I think that as we continue to run more race laps we will be able to have better results and more consistent lap times. I hope that we can keep up the momentum through San Jose next week and have another top-ten finish."
