Champ Car Drivers In Line For All America Honors
(December 2, 1998) - FedEx Championship Series drivers, led by two-time champion Alex Zanardi, were nominated for four of the six Open Wheel positions on the 1998 American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasts Association's All America Team ballot.
Joining Zanardi were Target/Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Jimmy Vasser (Target Reynard Honda), Greg Moore (Player's/Indeck Reynard Mercedes) and Dario Franchitti (KOOL Reynard Honda). Zanardi, Vasser and Moore are each previous first-team All-America members while Zanardi also has been a previous second-team selection and Vasser an honorable-mention choice.
AARWBA members will choose from among the six drivers named in each of the six categories (Open Wheel, Stock Car, Road Racing, Drag Racing, Short Track, At Large) and two from each will be named to the 12-member first team. The driver with the most votes will be rewarded with the Jerry Titus Award at the AARWBA Banquet January 16 in Long Beach, Calif.
The balloting also will determine a second team - drivers placing third and fourth in a category - as well as honorable mention choices. Cristiano Da Matta, the 1998 PPG-Dayton Indy Lights champion who will run for Arciero-Wells Racing's Champ Car program next season, was nominated for the ballot in the At Large division. The All-America team will be announced next week.
