ITT AUTOMOTIVE DETROIT GRAND PRIX Belle Isle Raceway Detroit, Michigan Sunday, June 12, 1994 Race Summary
TRACY SCORES FIRST 1994 WIN AT DETROIT --------------------------------------
Paul Tracy scored his first win of the year today after a bumping accident with Marlboro Penske teammate Al Unser Jr. Unser took the lead from polesitter Nigel Mansell on the second lap and led the race until Tracy hit him in the tail two-thirds of the way through the race. That enabled Unser to win his first race of the year with teammate Emerson Fittipaldi coming home second. Unser recovered to finish 10th.
Third place today went to Robby Gordon who chased Fittipaldi home in a strong performance. Nigel Mansell was running third ahead of Gordon and behind Fittipaldi when he ran into the back of Fittipaldi and went into the tire barriers. Mansell rejoined after limping to the pits, but pulled out of the race before the finish.
Teo Fabi had his best race of the year, finishing a competitive fourth today. Close behind in fifth place was Michael Andretti followed by Bobby Rahal and Jacques Villeneuve. The top 10 were completed by Mauricio Gugelmin, Bryan Herta and PPG Cup championship leader Unser.
After six of this year's 16 PPG Indy Car World Series races, Unser leads the championship with 83 points. Marlboro Team Penske teammate Fittipaldi is second with 70 points. Third is Michael Andretti (59), followed by Gordon (52), Mansell (46), Jimmy Vasser (37) and today's winner Tracy (36).
