Detroit Lessons

Detroit, MI (June 3, 1998) -- Last year's bizarre ITT Automotive Detroit Grand Prix marked the second year in a row that a FedEx Championship Series driver had been denied while within reach of his first victory. In 1996, Christian Fittipaldi (Kmart Swift Ford) led 64 of 72 laps at Detroit in pursuit of his first CART victory, but was passed by Newman/Haas Racing teammate Michael Andretti (Kmart /Texaco /Havoline Swift Ford) just seven laps from the checkered flag. "I knew I had to make the most out of the situation at the start of my last race in Detroit," Fittipaldi said. "It was wet, and I went from sixth place into the lead on the first lap. The car was really good in the wet and stayed good when the track dried out. I unfortunately made a small mistake toward the end of the race and I basically handed it over to Michael, who was there at the right time. The only thing I want to change is the way the race ended. Michael and I can always end up one and two, but this time I want to finish first and Michael can finish second. It would be excellent to win because my sponsor, Kmart, and our engine manufacturer, Ford, are [based] there. I think it's the least we can do because they've already put a lot of work, money and effort into the whole program."
