FORD RACING NOTES AND QUOTES QUALIFYING Friday, August 6, 1999 Detroit Grand Prix

MAX PAPIS -7- Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth - 10TH QUICKEST - "We were experimenting with some new things on the setup and we still have to understand what is required for us to go faster. I think it was a mediocre performance today ... not too bad, not too good. We have a lot to improve. We were quite fast this morning, but not many people had put new tires on. We have to work more to make it better for ourselves. We are getting close, but we don't quite know what we have to do to go a little better. The car must have to protect the rear tire here, and not have too much understeer. There's a fine line from finding good traction, but not having too much understeer."

BRYAN HERTA -8- Shell Ford-Cosworth - SIXTH QUICKEST - "It was okay this afternoon, but we're still sorting it out. I'm having a hard time keeping the back side of the car underneath me. The car's really, really loose right now, so we'll keep working on that. This track gets faster every time you run on it, so there's more for tomorrow." TURN TWO INCIDENTS THIS MORNING - "That's always been a tricky corner. What's probably amazing is that only two guys hit there. I think almost everybody just about hit it at least once today. It's just the nature of that corner. The car can really get nervous over there. If you just get a little off line you can get in trouble in a hurry. It's hard to find grip here because the track is so bumpy and rough, and tight. It's just hard to find grip. That's mainly what we're working on."

MICHAEL ANDRETTI -6- K Mart/Texaco/Havoline Ford-Cosworth - THIRD FASTEST -- "We should have been on pole. I just screwed up my lap. It would have been a real quick lap ... maybe a (one minute) 13 second lap on the last lap. I just messed up over around the (Scott) fountain area. I just got loose and I lost it. It's just a shame because it would have been nice to have a Ford up front here in Detroit. The track is a little slippery, but it's the same for everybody."

ROBERTO MORENO -11- Big K Ford-Cosworth - 19th QUICKEST/SPUN EARLY IN SESSION IN TURN 7/QUALIFIED IN BACKUP CAR/FIRST RACE WITH NEWMAN-HAAS THIS YEAR FILLING IN FOR CHRISTIAN FITTIPALDI - "There was too much bite up front there, and I just spun. There's a few things in the (backup) car that we need to work on. I was having some trouble getting the brakes to come in, and by then, the tires had lost their edge. It just wasn't right for us. The morning was okay, I just screwed up (this afternoon)."

ADRIAN FERNANDEZ -40- Tecate/Quaker State Ford - INJURED HIS WRIST IN A MORNING PRACTICE SESSION.

JAN MAGNUSSEN -20- Visteon Ford-Cosworth - 22ND QUICKEST/FIRST RACE THIS YEAR WITH PATRICK RACING REPLACING P.J. JONES - "It was a real green track and we had a lot of problems with the car today. We're trying to find the right direction to go in, and I think we're making some headway, even though the times don't really show it. It's absolutely a difficult adjustment because I haven't driven this track before. When you jump in in the middle of the season and everybody's already up and running, and they know what they're doing ... it's just difficult as hell. There's a lot more in the car, though. We'll go back, look at the data, and try to find out exactly what is happening. This is a great opportunity, though. For everybody at Visteon and Ford to believe in me, well, that's just great."
