Good Morning from the balmy banks of the Detroit River and The Raceway at Belle Isle for the opening day of practice and qualifying for Round Seven of the FedEx Championship Series, the Tenneco Automotive Grand Prix of Detroit! Today's Detroit weather has greeted the early arrivals to the downtown racecourse with partly cloudy skies and a strong breeze across the track from the south. Temperatures are expected to rise to the mid-to-high-70s by the Green Flag for today's Provisional Qualifying sessions. A large low-pressure system is on track to pass through the area tonight, probably producing thunderstorms, with scattered showers filling the rest of the weekend. The weekend's weather has partly cloudy skies and mild temperatures on tap for Saturday and Sunday's forecast.

The CART on-track schedule features the weekend's first practice session taking the Green Flag at 10:30 a.m. This full-field session will last 90 minutes. At 2:30 p.m., the FedEx Championship Series teams will again take to the track for the split-group provisional qualifying session with the fastest drivers from the previous road course (Long Beach) comprising Group Two. Each split-session provisional qualifying Group will be on track for 30 minutes with a 15-minute break between the two groups' efforts. Saturday's schedule has the Champ Cars again on track for practice from 10 a.m.-11:15 a.m. with the final round of CART qualifying scheduled from 1:45 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. This final qualifying session will again be in the split-group format, with the fastest drivers from Friday's provisional qualifying comprising Group Two. Again, each group will be on track for 30 minutes with a 15-minute break between the two Groups.

The late Greg Moore holds the track qualifying record with a speed of 114.859 mph (1:13.530 seconds). Sunday's schedule has the traditional 30-minute warm-up beginning at 9 a.m. followed by the Green Flag for the 84-lap Tenneco Automotive Grand Prix of Detroit at 1 p.m. (All times are local.)

GREEN FLAG waves at 10:30 a.m. to start the first practice session of the weekend. Firestone engineers report a track temperature of 85 degrees F. and an ambient temperature of 80 degrees F. at the start of the session.

BLACK FLAG is shown at 10:34 a.m. to #10 FONTANA for a Pit Road speed violation. FONTANA subsequently pits the car to comply with the Black Flag drive through penalty.

BLACK FLAG is shown at 10:37 a.m. to #32 CARPENTIER for a Pit Road speed violation. CARPENTIER subsequently pits the car to comply with the Black Flag drive through penalty.

At 10:39 a.m., #55X KANAAN pits with smoke appearing at the rear of the car.

At 10:40 a.m., 10 minutes into the session, the fastest driver is #32 CARPENTIER with a lap of 107.438 mph (1:18.382), followed by #3 CASTRONEVES (107.419 mph; 1:18.623) and #26 TRACY (104.788 mph; 1:20.597).

At 10:50 a.m., 20 minutes into the session, the fastest drive is now #3 CASTRONEVES with a lap of 110.105 mph (1:16.705), followed by #96 SERVIA (108.717 mph; 1:17.684) and #6 ANDRETTI (108.657 mph; 1:17.727).

At 11 a.m., 30 minutes into the session, the fastest driver is still #3 CASTRONEVES with his earlier lap of 110.105 mph (1:16.705), followed by #97 SERVIA (109.780 mph; 1:16.932) and #1X MONTOYA (109.680 mph; 1:17.002).

At 11:06 a.m., #6 ANDRETTI clocks the fastest lap of the session with a speed of 111.009 mph (1:16.000) on his 11th lap of the session.

At 11:10 a.m., 40 minutes into the session, the fastest driver is again #3 CASTRONEVES with a lap of 111.899 mph (1:15.475), followed by #6 ANDRETTI (111.009 mph; 1:16.080) and #55X KANAAN (110.600 mph; 1:16.362).

RED FLAG waves at 11:12 a.m. after #26 TRACY breaks traction at Turn 10, broadslides across the track from the inside of the corner and makes contact with the left rear corner of the car against the tire barrier. TRACY exits the car under his own power, but the car sustains damage to the right rear suspension as well as breaking the rear wing. TRACY's crew readies the secondary car for use in the remainder of the session.

GREEN FLAG waves at 11:20 a.m. to resume the session.

At 11:20 a.m., 50 minutes into the session, #3 CASTRONEVES is still the fastest driver with his earlier speed of 111.899 mph (1:15.475), followed by #6 ANDRETTI (111.009 mph; 1:16.080) and #55X KANAAN (110.600 mph; 1:16.362) in 3rd.

At 11:25 a.m., #3 CASTRONEVES ups his session-best speed to 112.569 mph (1:15.026) on his 21st lap of the session.

At 11:30 a.m., one hour into the session, the fastest driver is still #3 CASTRONEVES with his earlier lap of 111.899 mph (1:15.475), followed by #6 ANDRETTI (111.009 mph; 1:16.080) and #8 BRACK (110.790 mph; 1:16.231) in 3rd.

At 11:31 a.m., #34 MARQUES brushes the wall at Turn 5 but continues on course without apparent damage to the car.

At 11:37 a.m., #10 FONTANA spins at Turn 3 but makes no contact. The driver gets the car righted and continues on course without apparent damage to the car.

RED FLAG waves at 11:39 a.m. after #16 JOURDAIN JR. makes light contact against the tire barrier at Turn 10, damaging the rear wing and stalling the car. JOURDAIN JR. gets the car restarted and continues to his Pit Area.

At 11:40 a.m., 70 minutes into the session, the fastest driver is still #3 CASTRONEVES with his earlier speed of 112.569 mph (1:15.026), followed by #6 ANDRETTI (111.711 mph; 1:15.602) and #2 DE FERRAN (111.160 mph; 1:15.977).

At 11:50 a.m., the top three drivers and speed are unchanged from the 11:40 a.m. report.

GREEN FLAG waves at 11:51 a.m. to resume the session.

At 11:53 a.m., #26X TRACY brushes the wall at Turn 13 and continues on course without apparent damage to the car.

Also at 11:53 a.m., #8 BRACK slides into the run-off at Turn 5 and stalls the car. CART safety workers quickly get the car restarted and BRACK continues on course without apparent damage to the car.

RED FLAG waves at 11:53 a.m. as #34 MARQUES spins in the middle of the track exiting Turn 5 and stalls. #33 TAGLIANI is one of the many cars taking evasive action around MARQUES and TAGLIANI stalls just past MARQUES. CART safety workers quickly get MARQUES' car restarted.

GREEN FLAG waves at 11:56 a.m. to resume the session.

BLACK FLAG is shown at 11:57 a.m. to #6 ANDRETTI for a Pit Road speed violation. ANDRETTI subsequently pits the car to comply with the Black Flag drive through penalty.

At 11:59 a.m., CART course observers report smoke trailing from the rear of the #16 JOURDAIN JR.'s car while the driver is at speed on course.

CHECKERED FLAG waves at 12 p.m. to end the session with # 3 CASTRONEVES the top driver with his even faster lap of 113.449 mph (1:14.444), followed by #97 DA MATTA (113.010 mph; 1:14.733) and #96 SERVIA (112.647 mph; 1:14.974). FedEx Championship Series drivers introduced 32 different cars to the track in this morning's session with secondary cars utilized by #55X KANAAN, #1X MONTOYA, #16X JOURDIAN JR. and #12X VASSER, #19X KUROSAWA, #40X FERNANDEZ, #25X GARCIA JR., #11X FITTIPALDI, #96X SERVIA, #97 DA MATTA, and #5X NAKANO. CART drivers logged a total of 507 laps during this morning's session.
