Jourdain tenth in first day qualifying at Denver
DENVER, COLORADO . . . Team Rahal's Michel Jourdian Jr. piloted the Gigante car to tenth in first day qualifying for Sunday's Centrix Financial Grand Prix of Denver. Jourdain turned a fast lap of 95.048 mph during single car qualifying. "We made big improvements in the Gigante car from this morning. We really improved the balance, but we still have a ways to go. The track is a lot better than last year. They did a lot of work on the track and it is a lot smoother. Grip is the big issue now. The track is very slippery and that will present some problems for us. We lost a bit of track time his morning with a fuel pressure problem due to a loose fitting and that just put us behind from the start today. The problem for us is practice times determined qualifying order and today's qualifying results will determine the order for qualifying tomorrow. We have our work cut out for us now."
For Jourdain Saturday will take on added importance as he attempts to move up the grid for the race on the tight 1.6-mile street course. Last season Jourdain qualified tenth and finished ninth at Denver. The provisional pole went to Newman-Haas driver Bruno Junqueira who won the pole and the race at Denver last year. Junqueira turned a fast lap of 96.507 mph edging Adrian Fernandez and Darren Manning for the pole. Championship leader Paul Tracy, who Jourdain trails by 35 points, is fourth. Practice and qualifying will resume on Saturday. Qualifying will be broadcast live on SPEED at 3:30 pm EDT. The Centrix Financial Grand Prix of Denver will be taped delayed on Sunday on SPEED beginning at 9:00 pm EDT.
