Justin Wilson qualifies in fourth place on the streets of Downtown Denver
Denver, Colo., Aug. 11, 2006 -- Justin Wilson (#9 CDW / RuSPORT Ford-Cosworth / Lola / Bridgestone) took fourth place in provisional qualifying for the Grand Prix of Denver, recording a best lap time of 60.991 seconds on the streets of Downtown Denver. Wilson will look to improve his starting position for RuSPORT's hometown race on Sunday.
"Today wasn't too bad, but we were hoping to do a little better," said Wilson. "The track doesn't have much grip, and we're sliding around a lot. We just need to find more balance and a bit more grip for tomorrow. We'll keep working at it, and hopefully turn in a better result in final qualifying."
RuSPORT is competing in Denver without the No. 10 RuSPORT Champ Car, as Cristiano da Matta continues to recover from a serious head injury he suffered in a collision with a deer during a test session at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisc., last week.
"We're all missing Cristiano very much this weekend," said RuSPORT president Jeremy Dale. "The paddock and pit lane just aren't quite the same without him. All of our thoughts and best wishes are with Cristiano and his family. On the race track today, it wasn't a bad day for Justin and the CDW car 9 team. We're in fourth position, which is not quite where we want to be in terms of grid position, but we're only about two-tenths of a second off the pole. I think we have a very solid platform to build from, and Justin and his team have done a great job of putting a competitive car on the race track."
