Bourdais Set Series Record with Prov. Pole in Denver; Junqueira Fifth Despite Only Making One Run
Sebastien Bourdais, No. 2 McDonald's Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone:
"It feels good to put the McDonald's car on the provisional pole, get a point and a guaranteed front row start. This year we have not been performing that well on Friday but we have always been able to recover on Saturday. I'm just happy that we secured a front row start today. Now we can approach Saturday differently and maybe save some tires. It was a very difficult session. On the first set of tires I got some traffic then the red came out. Then on the second set I was going fast then slowing down when I would catch back up to Nelson. I thought he was going to pit but he didn't. I looked at the stop watch on the dash and figured I only had two laps left. I sacrificed one and had to do it on the last lap. Fortunately it worked out for us. This is a good indication for a pretty good weekend."
* FAST FACTS: Will be his second race here...Started third and finished second to teammate Junqueira last year...Has won four races and four poles in eight events not including today's provisional pole...Set a Champ Car record as the first driver to start in the top three in the first nine events to begin a season...Leads the point standings with 214.
Bruno Junqueira, No. 6 PacifiCare Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone:
"If I didn't Brush the wall the lap would have been good enough for pole at the time. I brushed the wall in Turn 3, the last corner before the timing line, and bent the front right suspension on the PacifiCare car. The lines in four of the turns are different this year with the changes to the track and we are working to adapt the car setup for the changes. I think I had a car to fight with Sebastien and Mario. Unfortunately I made a mistake and couldn't go out for my second run. It's very easy to make a mistake here."
* FAST FACTS: Will be his third race here. Won from pole in both events held here 0x2022 one with Ganassi Racing and one with NHR. Led all 100 laps in 2002 and 76 of 100 in 2003...Is second in the point standings with 166.
* NEWMAN/HAAS RACING FACTS: NHR has won ONE race (Junqueira 2003) and TWO poles in Denver (Junqueira 2003; Michael Andretti 1991*) and they have earned a total of four podium finishes (2nd 0x2022 Bourdais 2003; 3rd 0x2022 da Matta 2002). *Different track configuration than currently used.
ON THE SCHEDULE TOMORROW: The morning practice session will begin at 10 a.m. MT and final qualifying will take place from 1:45-2:45.
