DENVER (August 29, 2002) - Bridgestone, the Official Tire of the CART FedEx Championship Series, has secured the Pepsi Center ice for this weekend's Shell Grand Prix of Denver but will be less interested in normal Pepsi Center pursuits like Colorado Avalanche hockey than it will be about showing the traction of its new Bridgestone Blizzak ice and snow tires.
For the majority of the weekend, it will be open for free ice skating for fans attending the race who would like to come in and cool off. Bridgestone has worked with CART to conduct a Friday afternoon autograph session with CART drivers in the Pepsi Center so that more fans can pass through and get an inside perspective. In conjunction with the ice skating, the Bridgestone Winter Driving School from Steamboat Springs, Colo., will give hourly demonstrations on the ice to show how well the Bridgestone Blizzak ice and snow tires perform by comparing them to a regular passenger tire.
Two identical Toyota Matrixes will be used, one equipped with Blizzaks and one without. The winter driving school professionals will have to negotiate a short course on the ice that demonstrates the superior abilities of the Blizzaks in handling, accelerating and stopping. Throughout the weekend, fans will be selected at random to participate in the driving comparisons as well. On Friday evening Bridgestone will conduct a celebrity ice driving competition that will include Chris Pook, Bobby Rahal, Chip Ganassi, Kenny Brack and others. Fans are encouraged to remain in the Pepsi Center following the CART autograph session to watch the celebrity driving competition.
