Brooklyn, Mich. (July 23, 2000) - Memo Gidley drove the Della Penna Motorsports #10 DIRECTV Toyota/Reynard Champ Car to a tenth place finish in today's Michigan 500, his super speedway race debut. Team owner John Della Penna also announced that Gidley will drive for the team again next week in the Target Grand Prix at Chicago Motor Speedway.
Gidley persevered over a couple of obstacles this afternoon to battle back from a 21st place start and collect the second top-ten finish of his Champ Car career. The Della Penna Motorsports team replaced the engine in Gidley' s racecar this morning after warm-up, which brought Gidley into the pit lane on the parade lap for an installation check. Gidley and the team worked throughout the first part of the race to ease an ill-handling car.
Memo Gidley: "We had to dial the car in during the first part of the race and once we got it working well, we were able to charge past the leaders to get one of our laps back. This was a winning car by the end of the race and it's a shame that we didn't have it from the beginning."
On driving for DPM in Chicago: "It's definitely an advantage to have worked with the team this weekend going into Chicago. I know that this is a winning car and these guys will work extremely hard to give me everything I need to accomplish that. They understand what I need from the car. We had some good sessions this weekend and some less productive ones. So if we learn from those instances and make each session count in Chicago, I think we'll have a very successful weekend."
John Della Penna: "Memo did an incredible job for us all weekend and I'm happy with a tenth place finish (the team's best this season). At the beginning of the race, we didn't have a good balance on the car, but Memo persevered and worked with us to dial this car in. We would have had a top-five finish if the car had worked this well all day. This was definitely the most fun race this year for me."
On Gidley: "I think Memo brings a lot to the team. He's very focused and knows what he wants from the car. I knew that he'd be good because of his oval experience in the Toyota Atlantic series. You have to be very precise with those cars and he was quite successful in that series." k
