CHAMPCAR/CART: Dario Franchitti takes series message to Europe

INDIANAPOLIS (August 6, 2002) - Dario Franchitti (#27 KOOL Honda/Lola/Bridgestone) could have taken the off week in the CART FedEx Championship Series schedule to rest on his laurels, one week after taking the victory at the Molson Indy Vancouver, but kept his foot in it as he attended a media day in London to promote the CART event at Rockingham Motor Speedway.

Franchitti journeyed to the English capital on Monday to meet with some of the country's top sporting media, and took the time to explain oval-track passing to a reporter for the Observer Sport Monthly magazine for a regular feature which documents what it takes to drive and overtake on an oval course.

Monday's media day itinerary did not take Franchitti to the track which will host the Champ Cars on September 13-14, so he made his own trip to the English oval on Sunday, but as a spotter instead of a driver.

The eight-time CART winner served as a spotter for Sunday's ASCAR stock-car race at Rockingham for his friend Kevin McGarrity. It was the first ASCAR event for McGarrity, who would use Franchitti's help to find his way through the pair of 60-lap events.

"Kevin said he needed a spotter for the races on Sunday and I know what I'm doing with that job," Franchitti said. "I've been mates with Kevin for years and I told him I'd be happy to be a spotter for him again if I could fit it into my schedule."

Franchitti will head back to the United States where he will go back to his real job, as the pilot of the Team KOOL Green Honda/Lola/Bridgestone, as the series heads this weekend to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for Round 11 of the CART FedEx Championship Series schedule - the CART Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio.
