INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Dario Franchitti has agreed to a new contract with Team KOOL Green that will see him drive for the Indianapolis-based Champ Car team through the end of the 2003 season. Franchitti originally joined Team KOOL Green in 1998 and has since earned seven wins in the CART FedEx Championship Series, including his most recent victory in the Marconi Grand Prix of Cleveland. A native of Edinburgh, Scotland, Franchitti has ten Champ Car poles to his credit (including nine with Team KOOL Green) and finished runner-up in the 1999 FedEx Championship driving the KOOL Honda-Reynard.
"I'm very pleased to renew my association with Barry Green, KOOL, Paul Tracy and all my teammates at Team KOOL Green," said Franchitti. "During the past three and a half seasons we have grown as a team and established lifelong friendships together. Although we've enjoyed our share of success, I think everyone at Team KOOL Green will agree we still have a lot of work to do. There's a championship yet to be won this year, and then it will be on to 2002 and 2003 where, I believe, the best is yet to come for myself and Team KOOL Green."
Driving the #27 KOOL Honda-Reynard, Franchitti outscored all his opponents in the months of June and July. He currently holds down fourth place in the 2001 CART FedEx Championship standings, 23 points behind championship-leading Kenny Brack. "It's great to have Dario back for at least another couple of years," said Barry Green, owner of Team KOOL Green. "Not only does he possess the extraordinary physical talent and dedication that every great race driver must have to win races, he has the character and leadership essential to making ours a championship caliber team. On behalf of Team Green, KOOL, Klein Tools, Honda, Reynard and all our partners, I am proud to be associated with him."
"Brown & Williamson is excited that Dario will continue carrying the KOOL colors," said Bert Kremer, director of sponsorships. "We take great pride in the fact that Dario's new agreement, together with the contract extension Paul signed last year, ensures our sport's longest current driver partnership will continue."
Green established Team Green following the 1994 season and went on to claim four victories, including the Indianapolis 500 and the 1995 CART FedEx Championship as a rookie team owner. In 1996, Green entered into a partnership with Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation and their flagship cigarette brand KOOL. Driving for Team KOOL Green, Franchitti and Tracy have won twelve races and earned four one-two finishes in Champ Car competition in recent years.
