MILWAUKEE, Wisc. (May 7, 2002) --- Havoline driver Cristiano da Matta resumed his quest to become the 2002 CART FedEx Champion today when he tested at the Milwaukee Mile in preparation for the upcoming Miller Lite 250 on June 2.
Fresh from a quick trip home to Belo Horizonte, Brazil to recover from jetlag resulting from his return home from the Bridgestone Potenza 500 in Japan, da Matta returned to the United States for the two-day test that began today. After completing less than 50 miles, the team elected to end the test to concentrate on making changes to the race car in preparation for a full day of testing tomorrow, weather permitting.
"We made some progress on our short oval set-up from our first 2002 oval test in Homestead in March but we found out in Japan that we had more work to do," said da Matta. "Being on the cutting edge of technology is what this series is about so you have to keep improving or be left behind. We started the season strong in Mexico but others began closing the gap (in the second race) in Long Beach although we still had a strong car. Of the four tracks CART competes on, our short oval setup is our weakest and we know we need to improve in this area in order to fight for the Championship. It is still very early in the season and anything can happen. We still plan on being the guys to beat for the Championship. Hopefully the weather will cooperate tomorrow and we can continue to make some improvements to the balance of our car."
