Newman/Haas Racing's driver Cristiano da Matta picked up where he left off in Toronto, leading the first CART practice session with a time nearly 6 tenths of a second faster than second-fastest Paul Tracy. Da Matta's time of 58.167 (130.342 mph) was not close to the track record on the Burke Lakefront course (set by Jimmy Vasser in 1998 at 56.417), but was substantially quicker than the rest of the field. Tracy's fast lap was 58.753, and he was closely followed by da Matta's Newman/Haas teammate, Christian Fittipaldi (58.778.)

The three Ganassi Racing drivers were also fast today, with Kenny Brack in fourth and Scott Dixon and Bruno Junqueira in sixth and seventh. Team Rahal's Jimmy Vasser split the Ganassi teammates with the session's fifth-fastest time. Tracy's teammate at Team Green, Dario Franchitti, Walker Racing's Toranosuke Takagi, and the third Team Green driver, Michael Andretti rounded out the top ten fastest drivers.

First round qualifying for the CART Grand Prix of Cleveland will be today at 4:30 pm. EDT.
