PLAYER'S/FORSYTHE DRIVERS ALEX TAGLIANI AND PATRICK CARPENTIER QUALIFY INSIDE THE TOP 10 AT ROCKINGHAM - Teammates Alex Tagliani and Patrick Carpentier qualified ninth and 10th, respectively, for tomorrow's 'Sure for Men Rockingham 500' at the Rockingham Motor Speedway. Tagliani lapped the 1.479-mile oval in 25.158 seconds and an average speed of 211.638 miles per hour while Carpentier qualified with his effort of 25.182 seconds and a speed of 211.437 miles per hour. Kenny Brack claimed pole position with a lap of 24.908 seconds and an average speed of 213.763 miles per hour, followed by Michael Andretti in second and Cristiano da Matta in third.
ALEX TAGLIANI (#33 Player's/Indeck Ford) - Qualified 9th - "The car was stuck and I was flat out all the way around. I thought we were slow on the track. I don't know where it was coming from but we need to look at the data and see what happened. To me the car was good enough to go two or three miles an hour faster and still be flat but by ourselves we just weren't running fast enough. We cannot take more drag out of the car - we're completely trimmed out - but we didn't have enough speed. I don't know what it is ... it's not the car that's for sure. This car would go five miles an hour faster and I would still be fast because I have a lot of grip. By ourselves I think we needed a bit more power but it's too late now."
PATRICK CARPENTIER (#32 Player's/Indeck Ford) - Qualified 10th - YOU DIDN'T IMPROVE ON YOUR SECOND LAP. WHAT HAPPENED? "I think we overheated the engine, it got up to 149 or 150 degrees, which is way above the normal range and it stopped running down the front straight. It's too bad because it could've been better." OTHER THAN THAT PROBLEM HOW WAS THE CAR WORKING FOR YOU? "The car was good and I was just a bit loose in (Turn) four. It didn't keep me from being flat and the car was fast so it's too bad."
JIMMY VASSER (#8 Shell Ford) - Qualified 13th - "We were a tick slower than we were this morning and I think everyone was a bit slower without the draft. We'll take what we can get and start the car wherever we end up. I think we have a decent racecar but we're struggling for top end speed." YOU SEEM A LITTLE FRUSTRATED. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS GOING INTO THE RACE TOMORROW? "It's along race and grid position is important, but we've got to take what we get and do the best we can."
DARREN MANNING (#19 Team St. George Ford) - Qualified 17th - "I'm just glad to be out there and finally up to speed after a terrible time this morning. It was nice to get out there on some new rubber and get in some fast laps." HOW WAS YOUR FIRST EXPERIENCE RUNNING ON AN OVAL? "Fantastic. These cars run just beautifully. I was flat through (Turns) one, two and three that time and I was having a great time out there just trying to enjoy myself." WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH FOR THE RACE TOMORROW CONSIDERING YOU DON'T HAVE A LOT OF EXPERIENCE IN THESE CARS? "As you say it's going to be an uphill battle for me and really I just need more and more mileage. I'm guessing that I'm going to be stronger and stronger as the race goes on where as others might be tailing off. I'm really looking forward to it."
MARIO DOMINGUEZ (#55 Herdez Ford) - Qualified 18th - "This is a beautiful facility a beautiful track and I really love the fans. They've been great. I've been to England in the past but this is my first time racing here. The car was running pretty good this morning but it wasn't that great for us in qualifying and not very fast to tell you the truth. I'm hopeful that we can improve it for tomorrow and have a good car in the race."
MICHEL JOURDAIN, JR. (#9 Gigante Ford) - Qualified 19th - "This morning we had a lot of problems with the boost and then we blew an engine. I thought we were going to do much better but the car was quite loose and I had to lift and that just killed us. We didn't have a lot of running this morning and I really thought we were going to do better than this. Hopefully we can make some changes tonight that will give us a good car tomorrow." YOU'RE RUNNING A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT AERODYNAMIC PACKAGE THIS YEAR. HOW HAS IT AFFECTED THE CARS? "When you're by yourself it's okay. I don't know. I think we'd be a little bit faster without it but I don't know how it'll run in the race. We'll see tomorrow if it's good or bad."
