Cleveland, OH (July 11, 1998) - Jimmy Vasser's overnight provisional pole time held up to give Vasser his second pole position of the season. Vasser started on the pole in Motegi when qualifying was rained out and practice times were used to set the grid.

Vasser was very pleased with the set-up on his car. "We didn't run much this morning," Vasser said. During qualifying Vasser used his first set of tires to run some slow laps, scrubbing the tires to use in the race. "We sat in the pit lane for awhile. It didn't seem that the track was much quicker so we just scrubbed the first set.

With seven minutes left in the half hour qualifying session, Vasser tried "to push for one". Vasser's best lap in this afternoon's qualifying session was timed at 57.684 seconds, over a second slower than his pole time.

Vasser teammate, Alex Zanardi, was able to improve upon his Friday time but it was only good enough for third on the grid behind Dario Franchitti. Zanardi explained that he had a chance to look at his teammate's data and concluded that, "the only thing he had better than me was his right foot".

Vasser's pole was worth $10,000 by taking the Marlboro Pole Award. If Vasser can win from the pole in tomorrow's Medic Grand Prix, the win will be worth over a quarter of a million dollars.
