RSPORTS OFF TO A GOOD START IN CLEVELAND
CLEVELAND, Ohio (June 22, 2007) -- RSPORTS drivers Justin Wilson and Alex Tagliani were up and down on the Champ Car timing and scoring charts today, but the end result was a satisfying double top-six effort during provisional qualifying today in Cleveland.
Wilson and the #9 CDW/RSPORTS team struggled during the first practice session this afternoon, but they still were able to round out a top ten effort. The Brit posted his quickest time in the morning of 58.604 (129.370 mph), which was the ninth fastest lap recorded. Teammate Tagliani was feeling quite good about his #8 RSPORTS car, posting his fastest lap time of 58.365 (129.900 mph) right out of the box here in Cleveland and sat fifth quickest. It was a promising start for both drivers and they worked hard this afternoon preparing for the first round of qualifying for the Grand Prix of Cleveland Presented by LaSalle Bank.
The #9 CDW/RSPORTS team was able to make some progress with the set-up later in the afternoon to post the third fastest time in the pre-qualifying warm-up and the fourth fastest time in the first qualifying session. Wilson stayed on the harder, black Bridgestone Potenza tires for both stints and set his fastest time of 57.427 (132.022 mph) on his 14th and final lap. Tagliani and the 8 crew also decided to stay on the black Bridgestone Potenza tires, saving two sets of the softer Bridgestone Potenza Reds for the final round of qualifying. The French-Canadian was able to round out a top-six effort by posting a 57.652 (131.506 mph) on his 15th and final lap of the day. He sits two spots behind his teammate Wilson on the provisional qualifying results, but expects that tomorrow will be even better.
Tomorrow will bring on more racing action, with another practice session tomorrow morning, followed by final qualifying at 2:00 p.m. ET. The green flag for Sunday's Grand Prix of Cleveland Presented by LaSalle Bank will drop at 1:00 p.m., which will see the Champ Cars make their second standing start in series' history. The race can be seen live on CBS Sports with coverage beginning at 1:00 p.m. ET. Fans can also follow the RSPORTS team on the internet by logging onto www.champcar.ws and signing up for Race Director.
Justin Wilson #9 CDW Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone
"It started off tough this morning, but we are getting quicker. I still feel like we have some work to do, but our main aim is to try and get the #9 CDW car on the front row and from there we will strive for another podium."
Alex Tagliani #8 RSPORTS Cosworth/DP01/Bridgestone
"I feel pretty good. I think that the RSPORTS team did a fantastic job with the #8 RSPORTS car. We are quite pleased with the way the car is. I think we can be very competitive here this weekend and we are happy to be only three-tenths from the front row with the way the car is at the moment. So, I think that there is more to come and that we can definitely make some big improvements tomorrow."
