Mucho Marlboro Money!

This weekend's Medic Drug Grand Prix of Cleveland Presented by Star Bank marks the one-year anniversary since the Marlboro Pole Award rollover bonus was last claimed by Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda). Zanardi collected $100,000 in Marlboro money for his victory from the pole at Cleveland last year, including $90,000 in rollover funds which had accumulated at a rate of $15,000 per event subsequent to Paul Tracy's win at Nazareth. Zanardi and Tracy were the only two FedEx Championship Series drivers to win from the pole last year. As a result, it has been a CART-record 16 events since a victory from the pole, leading to a rollover of $255,000 this weekend.

The longest the series had previously gone without a victory from the pole was the final 10 events of the 1986 season. Coupled with the $10,000 awarded by Marlboro to the top qualifier at each FedEx Championship Series event, the potential Marlboro Pole Award payout this weekend is $265,000, over $100,000 more than the previous record award of $160,000 claimed by Al Unser Jr. (Marlboro Penske Mercedes) at Portland in 1994. The FedEx Championship Series record for combined wins from the pole in a single season is seven, set in 1985. The individual record for victories from the pole in a season is five, set by Mario Andretti in 1984. All told, there have been five winners from the pole at Cleveland, including Danny Sullivan (1986), Emerson Fittipaldi (1992), Tracy (1993), Unser Jr. (1994) and Zanardi last year.
