Tony Kanaan paced the Honda field today as the Marconi Grand Prix of Cleveland got underway. Kanaan,

who was 11th quickest in the morning practice session, worked through heavy traffic in the closing minutes of provisional qualifying to put his Honda-Lola in the number two position, matching his season's best start in Motegi, Japan.

Team Motorola driver Michael Andretti put in a solid day, qualifying fourth in the afternoon after turning the 10th fastest time of morning practice.

Defending race champion, Dario Franchitti, who suffered an electrical fire which cut short his morning practice session, regrouped and was able to qualify his back-up car in the seventh position. His team-mate Paul Tracy who was second in the morning session, qualified ninth.

Fernandez Racing team-mates Adrian Fernandez and Shinji Nakano both struggled with set-up and bottoming around the bumpy airport circuit in both practice and qualifying. They finished the day 16th and 17th respectively.

Tomorrow's final round of qualifying will be broadcast live on Speed Channel at 1:30 p.m. ET.

Tony Kanaan (#10 Mo Nunn Racing Honda): "We've been struggling on the street circuits this season. We've also had a lot of bad luck as well, so this is a really good way for us to start the weekend. I'm still not happy with my car, but don't get me wrongI'm very happy to be second! It was just like a bull fight out there. During my run I had a lot of traffic towards the end and then got blocked twice by the same guy, so that didn't make me happy. But the day will come when he's behind me and I have full mirrors. There's still a lot of work to do before tomorrow and changes that I want to make. I'm happy for the team, the guys have really been working hard and it's good to see some positive results for them "
