CHAMPCAR/CART: Cleveland Honda Driver Quotes

ALEX ZANARDI ( ...

ALEX ZANARDI (#1 Target/Chip Ganassi Racing Reynard Honda) Started 3rd, finished 1st (fifth win of 1998, 13th win, 2nd Cleveland win): "With this car, it was a 'Sunday-afternoon' drive for me. We had a great car again today, good power from Honda and good tires from Firestone. And I really believe that my team is at the very top of their game right now. The race finally ended up being an 'economy run' [ due to a yellow and final pit stop for the leaders on lap 68, seven to eight laps earlier than planned]. The race between Michael (Andretti) and myself might've been very different if the last yellow had taken place say, five laps later." DARIO FRANCHITTI (#27 Team KOOL Green Reynard Honda) Started 2nd, finished 3rd: "The most fun for me today was after the last pit stop when I was trying to catch Michael (Andretti). Unfortunately, the two places I needed to make up ground on him to make a pass, the first turn and turns 3-4, I couldn't do it. I need to work on my race starts and restarts a little bit, because I lost a couple of positions there today. Still, it was a good race for Team KOOL Green." GIL DE FERRAN (#5 Valvoline/Cummins/Walker Racing Reynard Honda) Started 11th, finished 6th: "It was a clean race with good stops for us. We were running upfront, and a podium finish looked definitely in the cards. It was very unfortunate we ran out of fuel coming into the pits, another half-gallon would've made a big difference. We had a good set of tires for the last stint and tried to make up some ground, but it was too much of a deficit to make up." JIMMY VASSER (#12 Target/Chip Ganassi Racing Reynard Honda) Started 1st, finished 7th: "We didn't get too many breaks today. In the warm-up this morning, the car jumped out of third gear and over-revved, so my guys had to do a quick engine change. The gearbox problems came back in the race, making it difficult to shift. Then the vent pipe in the (pitside) fuel tank broke during my second stop and that cost us a lot of time and track position. The last stint was just an economy run. I had to back off so much, I felt like I was driving my old Formula Ford again." TONY KANAAN (#21 LCI/Tasman Motorsports Reynard Honda) Started 19th, finished 14th: "The race was very busy. We had a spin at the first turn on the first lap. During the middle of the race, the tires went away when I was trying to catch everybody and we lost time on our pit stops with traffic problems there. So, it wasn't a great day, but it could have been worse, I suppose. It does seem in racing that when things go right, they go very right, and when not so right, they multiply. But we have six races in the next two months, plenty of opportunity to go better." PAUL TRACY (#26 Team KOOL Green Reynard Honda) Started 5th, finished 19th: "It's a shame. I beat Al (Unser) into the acceleration lane, and I felt he should've yielded to me. I had a great car today, but the [10-second "stop and wait"} penalty killed us. Then when Christian (Fittipaldi) stayed out on the last yellow, it put us a lap down and I lost any chance for championship points."
