BRACK TAKES THIRD ON PROVISIONAL GRID AT CLEVELAND
1. Dario Franchitti 57.961s/130.805 mph
2. Michael Andretti 57.975s/130.774 mph
3. Kenny Brack 58.049s/130.607 mph
15. Max Papis 58.726s/129.101 mph
#7 Max Papis - Miller Lite Ford Cosworth/Reynard
Papis battled a wicked oversteer in the Miller Lite car in the morning session. Papis finished 14th overall with a fast lap of 126.857 mph. In qualifying the car was more stable but Papis was unable to get a clear lap on fresh tires and qualified 15th at 58.726 sec./129.101 mph.
"We didn't have good balance today with the car," said Papis. "We had over steer and the rear was just too loose. With the bumpy track the rear end wants to hop around a lot. I know the track was getting better as the day went on so being in the first qualifying session hurt us. I think we can get the car settled down and have a competitive car on Saturday."
#8 Kenny Brack - Shell Ford Cosworth/Reynard
Brack took his first laps on the Burke Lakefront Airport course on Friday morning and spent the session fine tuning the car for the bumpy track. Brack finished the morning session sixth fastest at 127.699 mph. The track surface improved dramatically for qualifying and Brack turned the third fastest time of the qualifying session at 58.049 sec./130.607 mph, just 88 hundredths of a second off the pole time.
"This place is bumpier than the front straight at Indy," said Brack. "It is a flat track and an enjoyable course to drive. The curves are very fast and that is a nice change from the tight curves and sharp chicanes that so many of the newer tracks have. I spent some time with Bobby [Rahal] this morning driving around the track and I picked his brains for tips and tricks. It obviously paid off."
