Cleveland, OH (July 10, 1998) Bryan Herta set fast time in the first session on Friday morning with his lap of 57.391 seconds. Michael Andretti was second, followed by Mark Blundell, Gil de Ferran, and Christian Fittipaldi in fifth. Tony Kanaan, Dario Franchitti, Alex Zanardi, Paul Tracy, and Richie Hearn rounded out the top ten. A total of thirty six cars took to the track, many drivers taking to the spare.

Michael Andretti, Gil de Ferran, Andre Ribeiro, Al Unser Jr., J.J. Lehto, Helio Castro-Neves, P.J. Jones and Christian Fittipaldi all took two cars onto the circuit this morning.

The hour ad a half session was trouble free except for two spins by Meier and one by Moore. Neither driver made contact and both were able to continue after being restarted. Three other red flag periods were to tow in stalled cars.

A total of 525 laps were recorded during the morning session.

CART's first qualifying session gets underway at 3:05 this afternoon with the cars running in two groups. Each group will be given a half hour session.
