VASSER FASTEST FORD QUALIFIER - Team Rahal driver Jimmy Vasser was sixth-fastest during provisional qualifying for the Marconi Grand Prix of Cleveland, lapping the 2.106-mile temporary road course in 58.477 seconds. Cristiano da Matta claimed the provisional pole with his lap of 57.641 seconds, followed by Tony Kanaan and Scott Dixon.
JIMMY VASSER (#8 Shell Ford) - Provisionally Qualified 6th - "It's nice to see us be fast off the trailer for the first time in several races. The car feels pretty good and Ford-Cosworth has made a lot of big gains in their traction control. (Cosworth engineer) Dave Gudd is here again this weekend and he's helped us to sort out the problems we've been having with the electronics and the software. The chassis feels really good, but (Cristiano) da Matta is way out in front of everybody else."
PATRICK CARPENTIER (#32 Player's/Indeck Ford) - Provisionally Qualified 10th - "I'm pretty happy with where we're at, but I didn't get one clear lap the entire session. The guys with Ford and Cosworth have really made some good progress improving the consistency of their traction control system and I've got to say that it was fantastic today. We had a problem with the popoff valve during the afternoon and it absolutely killed our first stint. Then I got blocked twice on my final set of tires and just couldn't find clear track to try and put down a good lap."
MICHEL JOURDAIN, JR. (#9 Gigante Ford) - Provisionally Qualified 15th - "We were pretty good this morning, but we were having some problems with the brakes this afternoon. We came in to make some changes and see if we could fix it, but it don't think we got it right. I only managed to get one clean run on my second set of tires because of traffic, but we'll make some changes tonight and try to be better tomorrow."
MARIO DOMINGUEZ (#55 Herdez Competition Ford) - Provisionally Qualified 17th - "This is a very difficult track to drive and I think I'm still trying to figure it out. We started out slowly, but our lap times improved throughout the session and I think we made some progress. I've got some high expectations for tomorrow because we'll make some changes tonight, and along with some more track time tomorrow I'm sure we'll get the results we're looking for."
