Burke Lakefront Airport - Cleveland, Ohio - By the afternoon practice session the clouds had started to roll in and threatened rain at any minute. The track temperature went down to a mere 104 degrees and everyone enjoyed a cooler session than in the morning. On Fridays the practice sessions are treated as test days and the times do not compile with tomorrows. However, the fastest guys from today usually are the fastest tomorrow.

Session starts at 4 pm.

Six minutes into it Tony Kanaan spins at turn 5 and stalls. He is assessed an 8 minute delay-of session-penalty.

Oriol Servia spins at turn 8 and brings out the red flag fifteen minutes into the session. Servia rear ended the tire wall and damaged the car. He quickly got back to the pits to take out the backup car after serving his eight minuet delay-of-session penalty.

Jimmy Vasser is slow on the front stretch and parks the car off the track at turn one. The crew brings out the backup car so Vasser can run the rest of the session.

At 4:24 Bruno Junqueira stops the session by spinning and stalling at turn 10. The car is restarted and Bruno is served the eight minuet delay-of-session penalty.

30 minutes into the session the fastest driver is Cristiano da Matta (128.143 mph) followed by Gil de Ferran (!28.130 mph) with Helio Castroneves third fastest (128.033 mph).

Michel Jourdain Jr. spins and continues at turn six.

Patrick Carpentier spins and continues at one.

4:57 pm the track is red flagged for banners on the track near turn 8.

One hour into the session Castroneves was quickest at 130.805 mph. Paul Tracy is second (129.871 mph) and da Matta in third (129.804 mph).

Five minutes into the second hour the course is shut down for a loose cone at turn five.

Bryan Herta spins and continues at turn one.

Oriol Servia bring out another red flag near the end of the session when he stalls at the pit entrance.

Takagi spins and keeps going at turn 9.

Turn 8 sees Jourdain Jr. and Max Wilson both spin and stall with a minute to go in the session. The session is checkered flagged.

The fastest driver of the afternoon practice is da Matta with his last lap speed at 130.932 mph second fastest for the day was Castroneves with a 130.805 and Kenny Brack in third after a 130.036 mph lap speed.

What Cristiano da Matta had to say:

"The car was good right out the box. We are still working on areas that we need to improve where we are weak. I would say that my car was better this morning than this afternoon. We were fastest in both sessions so that makes us happy but today was a learning day. It doesn't give any points or tell you where you are going to start the race so we better keep working hard and be ready for qualifying.

Kenny Brack's comments:

"This morning was not a good reading for us. We ran some new tires at the end and jumped to fourth. I think we were about 12th fastest actually. But we made the car pretty good this afternoon. We worked with the car in the afternoon and we have solid platform to work with on Sunday."
