Target Grand prix Chicago Motor Speedway August 19-22, 1999 FedEx championship series Round 15 of 20
Practice Notes and Quotes: Thursday, August 19, 1999
Mauricjo Gugelmin, #17 Hollywood Pacwest Mercedes-Benz - 11th in morning practice (25.380 seconds/145,957 mph) - 4th in afternoon practice (23.823 seconds/155.497 mph)
"We ran two cars today, and both of them were working quite well. We elected to use the T-car after we had a little problem with the race car. I have some push in the middle of the corner, but the exit is pretty good - better than on most of the ovals so far. The circuit is constantly improving, so we have to read where we'll go from here. The low line is the only one that works right now, though.
I'm confident in the car. We've done a great job coming to a new place. The balance is pretty good. We hardly had to change anything apart from some ride heights.
The circuit is so smooth - a lot smoother than other places that we go - that you have to adjust the ride height accordingly. People were saying that this track was the same as Milwaukee, but it's nothing like it at all. The straights are longer, the corners are a lot tighter, and the surface is a lot smoother. I think they've done a great job. I just hope we can get enough rubber to have more than one line, so we can have an exciting race.
Mark Blundell, #1B Motorola pacwest Mercedes-Benz - 4th in morning practice (24.948 seconds/148.485 mph) - 10th in afternoon practice (23.956 seconds/154.633 mph)
"We had a pretty productive day. We tried a lot of things in a short period of time, but there's still more to do. I had a good lap on older tires and we have a lot of data to look at tonight.
It will be an interesting track to race on. It's wide, but right now only one line - the low one. We'll see what happens as the surface changes over the course of the weekend."
