Target Grand Prix Chicago Motor Speedway August 19-22, 1999 FedEx Championship Series Round 15 of 20
Post-qualifying notes and quotes: Saturday, August 21, 1999
Mark Blundell, #18 Motorola Pacwest Mercedes-Benz 2nd in qualifying (22.813 seconds/162.381 mph)
NOTE: Blundell's performance today matches his career-best CART qualifying result of second (Toronto and Elkhart Lake, 1997) and marks his best qualifying effort of 1999. His previous best starting position this season was fifth (Nazareth).
"I had a good lap. I had a bit of a wiggle coming out of Turn 4, but fortunately it didn't develop into a real wobble - that would have been bad! I just touched slightly with the rear and got a bit loose, but the guys gave me a great car and the whole package - Mercedes, Reynard, Firestone - was the one to have.
Everything has been going pretty well all weekend, actually. This race wIll be a lot better than Detroit and Mid-Ohio. To be honest, I was physically drained after the last event. Tomorrow's race should be a bit easier. The only problem is that this circuit demands very heavy braking, and the G-forces are so strong that it's more work to keep my neck muscles aligned."
Mauricio Gugelmin, #17 Hollywood PacWest Mercedes-Benz 12th in qualifying (23.187 seconds/159.762 mph)
"The car has had a pretty good balance right from the beginning of the weekend. Yesterday and this morning we had some brake problems, so we worked on fixing those. I had a little bit of push in qualifying - it was really pretty minor, though. It will actually be good for the race."
