Target Grand Prix Chicago Motor Speedway August 19-22, 1999 FedEx Championship Series Round 15 of 20
Post-race notes and quotes: Sunday, August 22, 1999
Mark Blundell, #18 Motorola PacWest Mercedes-Benz - Started: 2nd - Finished: 21st (DNF - Lap 142)
"We had some troubles at the start of the race - the car was a bit loose. Working with the team we managed to get the car balanced out again, and I felt quite comfortable. Unfortunately, we had a problem [suspected water leak) that caused us to stop. We were looking very good in terms of fuel consumption as well. It's just a shame that we didn't get a chance to carry out our plans for the rest of the race.
Mauricio Gugelmin, #17 Hollywood PacWest Mercedes-Benz - Started: 12th - Finished: 19th (DNF - Lap 187)
"The balance was pretty good today, although we had difficulty on restarts because the car was difficult to predict. That was the biggest problem I had. The engineers chased the balance really well with tire pressures. The trick today was to have a good car for the restarts when everybody was still settling down. Unfortunately, that's what I definitely didn't have. About fifteen laps before I retired, I started feeling a vibration at the back of the car coming from the gearbox. Something must have broken, because I lost the drive completely."
