CART FedEx Championship Series - Round 7 of 20
Grand Prix of Chicago, Chicago Motor Speedway, Cicero, Ill.
June 29-30, 2002

Race Distance: 257.25 miles (250 laps around the 1.029-mile oval).

Potenza Race Tires Supplied: Each car receives seven sets of dry-condition tires ("slicks") for the weekend, to be used as the team sees fit for practice, qualifying and the race. In all, Bridgestone shipped more than 600 race tires to Chicago. Produced at the Bridgestone Technical Center in Akron, Ohio, this same specification of Potenza racing radials was used earlier this month in CART's other short oval event at the Milwaukee Mile.

What is "stagger" anyway? To help a car turn more naturally and smoothly on ovals, the circumference of the right rear tire is slightly greater than the circumference of the left rear tire. This is called "stagger." The stagger is minute (only about 0.42 inches for this weekend's Bridgestone tires), but it is a huge asset for drivers trying to negotiate the intricacies of Chicago Motor Speedway.

Quote from Al Speyer, Executive Director, Bridgestone Motorsport: "Bridgestone is pleased with the effort CART put forth to retain a race in Chicago. This market is vital to the series itself and also important to us since the Bridgestone/Firestone company-owned store network is headquartered in suburban Chicago. In fact, we will be entertaining more than 500 Bridgestone associates and guests on race day. At CART's request, the Bridgestone Motorsport engineers developed a softer, higher-grip tire compound for the short ovals this year than has been seen in past Champ car competition. It was done with the belief that it would lead to two racing lines and overall better racing on the tight small ovals. We were happy to help and hope the Bridgestone tires all the teams are using contribute to an exciting show on Sunday."

The Official Tire of CART: Bridgestone joins the FedEx Championship Series in 2002 as the Official Tire of CART and, as such, will supply all teams with Bridgestone Potenza racing radials. While it is Bridgestone's first year in this series, the tire manufacturer boasts an enviable and winning racing heritage that spans four decades.

Tune In: The Grand Prix of Chicago will be broadcast nationally on CBS-TV at 3:30 p.m. ET Sunday.
