Castro-Neves Joins Team Alumax
Helio Castro-Neves, runner-up in the 1997 PPG-Firestone Indy Lights championship, was named on Wednesday to drive the Team Alumax Reynard Mercedes-Benz in this year's FedEx Championship Series. Castro-Neves, who is managed by 1989 PPG Cup champion Emerson Fittipaldi, tested with the Bettenhausen team at Sebring International Raceway last week and came to terms with team owner Tony Bettenhausen early this week.
"Helio has impressed a lot of people in a short time and I have every reason to believe that he will be competitive in our series," Bettenhausen said. "With the latest Reynard chassis, the new Mercedes engine, Goodyear tires and this promising, young driver, we are going to have a very strong program."
Casto-Neves earned three Indy Lights victories under the Tasman Motorsports Group banner last year as well as capturing four pole positions and totaling seven podium finishes. He completed a one-two finish for Tasman in the championship, as teammate Tony Kanaan - recently named to drive Tasman's entry in this year's FedEx Championship Series - won the championship.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for me," Castro-Neves said. "I know this is a capable team, and I am very excited about my prospects for success in 1998.
"My advice to Helio was to go with Tony Bettenhausen, "Fittipaldi said. "I have known Tony for a longer time and I think Helio will have a fantastic career with his team.
The Bettenhausen Motorsports team plans to make an additional announcement concerning the team's future plans during a press luncheon at CART's third annual Spring Training, Feb. 3 at the Miami-Date Homestead Motorsports Complex.
